This morning we toured the Guangzhou Folk Art Museum. It was a house used by wealthy men for the holidays or for boys to study for their exams. Chairman Mao’s government claimed it as theirs also. Now, each of the rooms surrounding the center courtyard houses Chi*ese art and artifacts. There was old furniture, embroidery with details so fine that it looked like a painting until you were right up in font of it, carved ivory, ceramics, etc. We also stopped by the pearl market so another family could buy some pearls to take home with them. You'd never believe how many stands there are there, and inside each there are just bags and bags of pearls. Each pearl is hand strung and knotted individually. While we were there a little girl whose parents must have owned the booth brought Lollipop a small cupcake with sunflower seeds on top. She enjoyed it.
The rest of today was very laid back. Most of our time here in Guangzhou is spent waiting around for the proper paperwork to be completed by the US Consulate. We played in the hotel room, played in the hotel’s toy room, ate dinner at Lucy’s: the local diner that serves American and Asian food, and shopped a little around Shamain Island. There was a big thunderstorm today with loud cracks of thunder, lightning, and a huge downpour of rain. Luckily we were in our hotel room and L.P. slept through it all.
We are enjoying the calm, tropical oasis atmosphere of Shamain Island. We checked out the pool today and are going to take L.P. swimming for the first time tomorrow. As L.P. loves taking baths now with her bathing suit on, we think she should enjoy the shallow section of the White Swan pool. It should be just like a big bath tub to her.
